Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

PSYCHē is the only outpatient practice in Boston and in Tennessee with a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician™ on staff. See how credentialing makes a difference.

The effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has been supported by research for treating a variety of issues. Originally developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD. in the 1980's to treat severe suicidality and self-injury, it is notorious for treating Borderline Personality Disorder in women.

In recent years, DBT has since been helpful in treating other issues such as depression, impulsivity, anger, & more.

DBT focuses on balancing acceptance and change, teaching real-world skills, and providing support between sessions in order to meet treatment goals. DBT draws upon the extensive Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) research, and was originally introduced as a specialized form of CBT.

Individual DBT Sessions

DBT-to-fidelity asks for a "gentleman's agreement" to commit to a 1-year of weekly therapy. Stage 1 of DBT treatment sessions focus on stabilizing mood and changing behavior. A heavy emphasis is placed on mindfulness and applying skills learned in DBT group to your specific situation. DBT therapists work with you on goals to move toward creating a life worth living.

Stage 2 of DBT includes processing of traumatic memories through exposure treatments or changing unhelpful core-beliefs that are a result of traumatic invalidation.

DBT Skills Training Group

Weekly DBT-Skills Training Groups cover specific skills to increase mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT Skills Groups are like a class (not therapy). Most clients think they won't like DBT group but are usually pleasantly surprised and then are amazed by the effectiveness of the skills!

Standard DBT for Adults is 52 weeks of group so all the skills are reviewed twice. Material covered comes from Marsha Linehan's "DBT Skills Training Handouts and Worksheets." Members can join anytime.

Phone Coaching and Between Session Support

Clients participating in the DBT program at PSYCHē receive intersession support through telephone, text, and email. Therapists assist clients with in-the-moment crisis management, task accountability, and case management. The main priority of intersession contact is to maintain active use of DBT Skills for effective coping.

Therapists may assist with case management such as coordinating outside providers (Psychiatrists, Physicians, Dietitians) and ancillary services (12-Step Meetings, Social Clubs). Our Therapists are known to go above-and-beyond and will not leave you hanging. Our team approach ensures if one Therapist is unavailable, the client has access for support when necessary.

PSYCHē participates in a weekly staff consultation group to maintain DBT-to-Fidelity.
